Something I discovered with my pits very early on is they love to CHEW! Unlike most dogs, pits can tear through a commercial rawhide bone in minutes. My pits prefer the "compressed" rawhide, they last alot longer and seem to satisfy their chewing instinct. Knuckle bones are also something great, that lasts awhile. They can gnaw on the knuckle bones, set it aside and come back to it anytime. (It doesn't get that awful smell that large rawhides do when they sit) You don't have to worry about splintering bones with the knuckle bones. I usually buy them in the "giant" size, available at Petsmart Online for about $10.99. This is a HUGE bone which I take a hammer to and crack in half for both my dogs. They each get a large knuckle, since there is one on both ends, plus the "goodies" inside the bone. Nylabone's also last a very long time, but they lose interest in them rather quickly. But be sure to purchase a size large enough for them to chew on and try not to swallow whole! I stay away from Booda bones, velvet bones, the new compressed flavor bones (peanut, carrot, apple) because they break immediately and are gone in seconds! I try to always monitor them when they get a new chew. I've pulled out pieces of those cheaper rawhide bones from their throats one too many times.
If your pit is anything like mine, they go insane for tug-of-war. I know, in all of the behavior books you read about dogs, they say never play tug-of-war, because it is a control game and you won't be thought of as the "alpha dog" in your family. Well, my own opinion is that is just bull. They will play this game until they are exhausted! Sometimes I play with them, sometimes they just play amongst themselves. I've seen Sheba drag and exhausted Lily across the room while Lily still held on to the tug toy, lol! They never wanna let go! Actually, I'm a dog behaviorist's nightmare! My pits sleep with me, Sheba under the covers, Lily on top. I self feed them, so they can eat when they want. I spend more on their toys and chews than I do on my groceries! They will play tug of war with just about anything, but I recommend those thick rope braids. You can get them with a couple of large knots tied in them or stuffed animals on the ends (the stuffed parts are ripped quickly). Be sure to replace when it gets frayed! Also, check out the new "tuff toys". These are fun to toss around and play fetch with and last a long time.
